Compass Montessori Junior High, located in the heart of downtown Traverse City along the beautiful Grand Traverse Bay, is excited to announce the opening for a full-time Junior High Guide (7th and 8th grade). Our newly remodeled campus is part of The Children’s House Independent Montessori School, established in 1984, which serves 260 students from infant through 8th grade.

About the Role:
As a Junior High Guide, you are part of a collaborative, creative teaching team dedicated to supporting students during a critical stage of development. This role centers on guiding adolescents through an interdisciplinary, workshop-based, and experiential learning environment that fosters independence, curiosity, community and responsibility.

The Guide intentionally designs and prepares the environment to provide opportunities for adolescents to develop their identity through meaningful work.  

Montessori education is an education for peace. Guides work closely together to co-plan a 2-year curriculum cycle that inspires and engages learners, fostering independence and interdependence.

The Guide supports adolescents in developing not only academic skills but also social responsibility, self-awareness, and a sense of belonging.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage adolescents in individual and group work. 
  • Develop and implement interdisciplinary lessons that encourage hands-on learning. 
  • Foster a supportive, community-oriented classroom environment. 
  • Collaborate with colleagues to design innovative and engaging curricula. 
  • Travel overnight with adolescents (required up to 24 nights per year)
  • Support students in their personal growth, social development, and academic journey.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or higher with a focus in education
  • Specific area(s) of study (English, Mathematics, Science, History/Humanities, Economics, Arts, Physical Education)
  • Teaching experience with adolescents
  • Strong commitment/interest in Montessori principles 
  • Passion for working with middle school students
  • Organized, assertive 
  • Humility, compassion, curiosity, and patience
  • Experience in designing interdisciplinary, experiential learning opportunities that inspire curiosity, critical thinking, and independent exploration
  • Enthusiasm for professional growth, including the potential to earn an AMI Adolescent Diploma (sponsorship provided)
  • Excitement for travel- by van, plane, train, boat, and foot to places ranging from urban to backcountry camping
  • A positive outlook, a sense of adventure, and joy!
